Write a good essay

Key points on writing a good essay

First, when writing an essay determine your text type. Specifically, decide on the most appropriate type of text your essay must be. Types include an argument, a proposal for solving a problem, a causal analysis, i.e. discussing the cause or causes of a problem, a comparison or a description. These are the most common types of essays. An essay may combine several types of text, for instance combining an argument and a proposal. In each text type, there are some rules that must be considered.

Below, we shall look at the common steps in writing and structuring of essays.

Common steps in writing and structuring any type of essay

After you have determined the most appropriate text type for your essay, consider these points when structuring and writing the essay.

  • Essays have typically three sections: introduction, body and conclusion.
  • The introduction section should provide a precise, clear and brief explanation of the essay topic and structure. In other words, explain your thesis statement or topic and how you have structured your essay.
  • When writing your essay, you should take the hands of the readers and take them thorough your essay step by step so that they know what the focus of each coming paragraph is about. Think of yourself as a tour guide introducing a topic and taking your readers through an important and interesting area.
  • Consider each paragraph to resemble an essay. In other words, each paragraph has to have an introduction, a body and a conclusion. More specifically, the first line of the paragraphs should inform the reader what the paragraph will examine and discuss. The final line of the paragraph completes the discussion and points to the subsequent paragraph.
  • Choose a referencing methodology. Each time you begin a new discussion, mention the reference and its source.
  • If your text type is an argument, after having claimed what you needed to claim, dedicate a paragraph to critical evaluation. In other words, in the penultimate paragraph of the body, reject all your claims and evaluate your claims critically. Then, in the last paragraph of the body, reject the counter arguments based on the references you have, and defend your thesis statement.
