In order to be able to analyse sentences, you should learn the fundaments of sentence analysis as named below:

  • the eight word classes
  • the seven functions
  • the six primary materials
  • and the five secondary materials.

Below is a list of each group.

The eight word classes:

  • Verbs (v)
  • Nouns (n)
  • Articles/Determiners (Det)
  • Adjectives (Adj)
  • Adverbs (Adv)
  • Pronouns (Pron)
  • Prepositions (p)
  • Conjunctions (Conj.)

The seven word functions:

  • Subjects (S)
  • Verbs (V),
  • Direct Objects (DO),
  • Indirect Objects (IO),
  • Subject Complements (SC),
  • Object Complements (OC)
  • Adverbials (A)

The six primary materials:

  • Verb Phrases (VP)
  • Noun Phrases (NP)
  • Adjective Phrases (Adj. P)
  • Adverb Phrases (Adv. P)
  • Prepositional Phrases (PP)
  • Clauses

The five secondary materials:

  • Determiners (Det)
  • Heads (H)
  • Premodifiers (PrM)
  • Postmodifiers (PoM)
  • Prepositional Complements (PC)
